Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

On February 27 turns the 70th anniversary of a prominent scientist who has made a significant contribution to the development of art criticisim in Azerbaijan, head department of the Institute of Architecture and Art, corresponding member of ANAS Rena Mammadova.

Rena Azer gizi Mammadova was born on February 27, 1950 in Baku. In 1968 she graduated from high school music after Bulbul, and in 1973 the Azerbaijan State Conservatory named after Uzeyir Hajibayli (now the Baku Academy of Music). She began her career in 1978 as a researcher at the Institute of Architecture and Art of ANAS, and since 1990, she has been heading the Department of Art Interconnections at the same institute.

In 1981, she defended her dissertation on the topic: “The role of the Azerbaijan moment-intonation regularities in foundation of the sonata form of Uzeyir Hajibeyli” in 1990 at the Kiev Conservatory, a doctoral dissertation on the topic “Azerbaijan Mugam: the origins of the formation and functioning. "R. Mammadova is the first Azerbaijani woman musician to receive a doctorate in art history. In 1955, she was awarded the title of professor, and in 2001, she was elected a corresponding member of ANAS.

Research scientist on the relationship of art, the comparative study of art, musical Turkology and other areas are of great importance in terms of research and promotion of our history of musical thought, as well as culture. The scientific achievements of the scientist are reflected in the books “The Functionality Problem in the Azerbaijani Mugam”, “Azerbaijan Mugam”, “Musical Turkology”, “Pages from the History of the Azerbaijan Musical Theater”, as well as in more than 300 scientific articles published in the republic and abroad. About 30 doctors of philosophy and science were trained under the guidance of a scientist.

Rena Mammadova is an active member of the Russian Academy of Pedagogical and Social Sciences, a member of the editorial board of the network society of Russian cultural scientists, the Board of the Composers’ Union of Azerbaijan, Union of Azerbaijan Artists, the Presidium of the Cultural Association "Simurg", as well as many republican journals.

The scientist received the following awards: “Banner of Azerbaijan”, “Golden Pen”, “Enlightener of the people”, Diplomas of ANAS.
