Since the advent in 2000 of the Altai-Sayan geodynamic network of space geodesy, which already includes 25 GPS observation points, specialists from the Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics named after A.A. Trofimuk SB RAS uses space geodesy to measure modern displacements of the earth's surface.
The data obtained over almost 20 years led to the conclusion that in the southeast of Gorny Altai in the epicentral zone of the Chui earthquake that occurred on September 27, 2003, the attenuation of postseismic displacements continues. Nowadays, the modern speed of horizontal tectonic movements of the Altai Mountains relative to the northern part of Eurasia is 1.19 mm per year - 30 degrees to the north-west.
