Today marks the first International Day of Mathematics

Taking into account the contribution of mathematics to forecasting food needs and achieving sustainable development goals against the backdrop of global problems such as climate change, loss of biodiversity and the constant growth of the world's population, the International Mathematical Union has approached UNESCO with the proposal to establish an International Mathematics Day.

At the 40th session of the UNESCO General Assembly in Paris on November 26, 2019, it was decided to celebrate International Mathematics Day on March 14 of each year.

UNESCO encouraged Member States, as well as intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, research centers, civil society organizations, universities, etc. to celebrate this day and launch new innovative projects to enhance the potential of mathematics in Member States, taking advantage of the opportunities provided by International Day. mathematics.

According to the board member of the International Mathematical Union, as well as the project of the International Day of Mathematics of Turkish professor Betul Tanbay, the main goal of this international event is to convey the importance of mathematics to the world community and to promote the irreplaceable role of mathematics in the development of modern science. “This remarkable date, celebrated this year for the first time as an official holiday, will be remembered by numerous events under the slogan “Mathematics is everywhere”, the scientist said.

Note that, since this year March 14th falls on Saturday, the UNESCO decision will mark events dedicated to International Mathematics Day on March 13.
