March 27 marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding scientist, honored teacher of the Republic of Azerbaijan, director of the Institute of Art, Language and Literature of the Nakhchivan Division, ANAS corresponding member Abulfaz Guliyev, who made an exceptional contribution to the development of Azerbaijani linguistics and world Turkology.

Abulfaz Guliyev was born on March 27, 1950 in the city of Nakhchivan. After graduating with honors from the Philological faculty of Baku State University in 1971, he came to Nakhchivan and worked at city secondary school No. 1 for a year. In 1972, he worked as a junior researcher in the newly created Nakhchivan Regional Scientific Center (now the Nakhchivan Division of ANAS). Since 1973, he worked as a teacher and senior teacher at the Nakhchivan State Pedagogical Institute.

In 1979, he defended his thesis on "Non-conjugate forms of the verb in the Orkhon-Yenisei monuments (compared with the Azerbaijani language)" and received a Ph.D. in Philology, and in 1989 received the title of Associate Professor. In 2003 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “The lexical-semantic system of ancient Turkish anomastics”. A. Guliyev was awarded the title of professor in 2006, in 2007 he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS.

In 1993-2003, the scientist headed the department of Azerbaijani Linguistics of the History and Philology Faculty of Nakhchivan State University. He has been the director of the Institute of Art, Language and Literature of the Nakhchivan Division of ANAS since its foundation.

The scientist is the author, compiler and translator of about 50 books and monographs as a result of his extensive research. He is also the author of articles published in about 350 reputable scientific journals.

Abulfaz Guliyev, a member of the State Language Commission, served as chairman of the dissertation council at the Nakhchivan State University, was elected a member of the ANAS coordinating councils on the "Azerbaijan Language" and "Turkology" and the dissertation council on "Textology". He is the editor-in-chief of the scientific journal "Researches", founded by the Institute of Art, Language and Literature, deputy editor-in-chief of the journal "Scientific Works" of the Nakhchivan Division, and also a member of the editorial board of several authoritative scientific journals.

Under the guidance of a scientist, 12 candidate dissertations were defended. He is the author of significant works on the study of medieval Turkic literature, including the study of Nakhchivan dialects and dialects. He translated Masnavi of Jalaleddin Rumi (in 3 volumes) into Azerbaijani.

An outstanding scientist taught Turkology, Ancient Turkic and Middle Turkic languages ​​at universities of the Republic of Turkey, lectured on the ancient history of the Turkic language and the history of Turkic literature. Over the years of his work in Turkey, he translated a large monograph by A. Borovkov, a Russian orientalist, entitled "Dictionary of the Turkic interpretation of the Koran (XII-XIII centuries) found in Central Asia", translated into Turkish.

For his scientific and pedagogical activities, he was awarded the honorary title “Honored Teacher of the Republic of Azerbaijan” and the International Shahriyar Award.
