Geology is called the science of the structure of the Earth and the history of its development. The main object of study of this science is the rocks that reflect the geological chronicle of the Earth.

Geology also studies the Earth's surface and modern physical processes and mechanisms beneath it. The study of various processes allows us to obtain information about the development of the planet in the past.

Geologists' Day is traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday of April every year by specialists in geological sciences and specialties in many countries of the former USSR. By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 31, 1966, it was decided to celebrate this significant day, taking into account the services of Soviet geologists in the creation of the mineral resource base.

On the eve of this holiday, geologists-specialists receive state awards for many years of productive research activities and services, are awarded honorary degrees and orders.

Note that prominent geologists of Azerbaijan - Alashraf Alizadeh, Mirali Gashgay and Shamil Azizbayov were closely involved in the organization of ANAS in 1945. As a result of hard work of Sh. Azizbeyov, M.Gashgay, A.Alizadeh, M.Aliyev, G.Afandiyev, Sh.Mehdiyev and other talented scientists, geology science was developed in Azerbaijan.

After the national leader Heydar Aliyev came to power in the republic, attention and care for the development of science in our country increased, and in 1994, with the signing of the "Contract of the Century", Azerbaijani geologists began to conduct joint research with Western scientists.

Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS also plays an important role in the development of geological science in our country. This scientific institution is a scientific center that conducts many fundamental and applied research. Scientific schools in the fields of oil geology, mud volcanism, paleontology and stratigraphy, lithology, geophysics, geotectonics and geodynamics, development of oil and gas fields have been established here.
