55 years have passed since the death of the scientist-numismatist Evgeny Pakhomov

55 years have passed since the death of the Caucasian scientist, founder of Azerbaijani numismatics, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, professor Evgeny Pakhomov.

Evgeny Pakhomov was born on February 25, 1880 in the city of Stavropol-Caucasus (now Stavropol). Later he moved to Georgia with his family, received secondary education in Tbilisi (Georgia) and higher education at the St. Petersburg Institute of Archeology and the Institute of Technology.

The scientist's activity as a process engineer at the excise department of the South Caucasus in 1902-1916. played an important role in gaining experience in numismatic science and becoming a professional specialist. It was during this period that he was sent to various parts of the South Caucasus to study ancient monuments, especially actively collaborating with the Caucasus Museum in Tbilisi.

In addition to European languages, E. Pakhomov, who speaks Georgian, Armenian, Arabic, Persian and Turkish, studied coins stored in a number of museums and private collections, with reference to paleography, source studies, economic history, historical geography and topography, as well as special methodological skills.

He moved to Baku in 1919 and until the end of his life he was engaged in scientific and pedagogical activities at the Museum of History of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University, BSU).

The scientist who created the Numismatic cabinet at BSU gave lectures on the History of Azerbaijan, Eastern Numismatics and Archeology.

In the years 1922-1954. E. Pakhomov worked as the head of the Department of Archeology and Numismatics of BSU, in 1941 he was awarded the title of Associate Professor, in 1947 - the title of Professor.

In 1946, the scientist was awarded the Sharaf badge and the honorary title of Honored Science Worker of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1955. In 1962, he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR.

Taking part in numerous archaeological expeditions (Ganja, Mingachevir, Mil plain, Beylagan), E. Pakhomov was the first researcher of the Pahlavian and Arabic graphic epigraphy, medieval architectural and archaeological sites of the region in about 100 articles, dissertations and other scientific works on Caucasian numismatics. He was sent to Moscow and Leningrad museums and collected "materials on Azerbaijani studies."

The scientist, who was a member of the Azerbaijan branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1933-1965, was subsequently elected a full member of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences and published the collection "Azerbaijan coins".

In 1960 and 1965, by a decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan SSR, he was awarded diplomas. In the works of E. Pakhomov, the history and historical geography of the South Caucasus, the Pahlavsky and Arabic graphic archaeological objects, as well as the historical and architectural monuments of Absheron, Barda, and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan were studied.

Documents with personal manuscripts of the numismatic scientist, coin information sheets and other important materials are currently stored in the funds of the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan. A photograph of the scientist is exhibited in the museum lobby.

Evgeny Pakhomov, author of more than 80 works, passed away on May 5, 1965.

On the occasion of the scientist’s 140th anniversary and 55th anniversary of his death, employees of the National Museum of Azerbaijan History of ANAS - head of the Department of Numismatics and Epigraphy of the museum, professor Ali Rajabli, deputy director for science of the museum, Doctor of historical sciences Nargiz Aliyeva prepared reports, senior researcher of this the same department, PhD in History Aygun Mammadova - presentation on the materials of the museum fund.
