Scientists have found that in the star system HR 6819, located just 1000 light-years from Earth, in addition to the two companion stars that are visible to the naked eye, there is also a black hole closest to our planet. The discovery is described in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
A team of astronomers from the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in collaboration with colleagues from other institutes, using a 2.2-meter telescope at the ESO La Silla Observatory in Chile, studied the structural details of the HR 6819 star system in the constellation Telescope. This system is so close to us that its stars can be seen in the Southern Hemisphere without binoculars or a telescope.
