Completed researches at the Omar Sultan Sanctuary

The archeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS has completed research at the Omar Sultan Sanctuary in the Avakhil village of Shamakhi region. As a result of research led by Professor Gafar Jabiyev, the tomb of Pir Omar Avakhili Shirvani, the founder of the secret school of secrecy, an important branch of Azerbaijani Sufism, was discovered and studied.

The relatively well-preserved part of the northern walls of the tomb, built of hewn river and rocks, is 2.1 meters high and 0.9 meters thick. The tomb chamber, which runs east-west along the southern side of the tomb, is 0.9 meters wide and 2.1 meters long. A special chair has been set up in the tomb for visitors to sit and recite.

Archaeologists have unearthed scientifically significant artifacts of Pir Omar inside and outside the tomb. Of particular interest are the tombstones and tombs of Pir Omar. It is clear from the tomb inscription that Pir Omar died in July 1409. In the book, Pir Omar is addressed with such epithets as "sheikh", "zahid", "abid".

Several other inscriptions were found around the tomb. One of these inscriptions belongs to Sheikh Jalil, a descendant of Sultan Bayazid, and the other to Allahvermish, the son of Sheikh Jalil.

Numerous Muslim graves were found in the area during the excavation.

On May 25, President Ilham Aliyev and First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva visited the Pir Omar Sultan Sanctuary as part of their visit to Shamakhi region and inquired about archeological research there. President gave instructions and recommendations to the relevant agencies to continue research at the sanctuary and conserve the monument Pir Omar Sultan.
