The World Health Organization (WHO) has discontinued trials of anti-malarial hydroxychloroquine and drugs for HIV carriers lopinavir and ritonavir as a treatment for patients with COVID-19.
According to a statement published on the organization’s website, these three drugs only slightly reduce or do not affect mortality among those infected with coronavirus.
WHO emphasizes that the decision to suspend tests applies only to the international Solidarity program and does not exclude evaluating the effectiveness of drugs in the treatment of patients who have not been hospitalized, as well as in the prevention of COVID-19.
In late May, WHO briefly suspended hydroxychloroquine trials after the study was published by The Lancet. Then the organization decided to wait for data on the safety of the drug in the treatment of COVID-19. Already on June 3, the tests were resumed.
