A tuberculosis vaccine can help reduce the death rate from COVID-19, according to a new study in the American scientific journal PNAS.
A vaccine called bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) provides non-specific immunity, that is, protection against other diseases. Researchers found that countries with widespread BCG have a lower mortality rate from coronavirus.
The report emphasizes that further research is needed and the results “should be considered with caution”. Clinical trials are being conducted in the Netherlands and Australia.
The tuberculosis vaccine has been used for over 90 years and is safe for children and adults.
