The world's first successful face and hand transplant was performed

Joe Dimeo, a 22-year-old American from New Jersey, became the first person in the world to have a successful face and hand transplant.

It is noted that previously only two such operations were carried out in the world, but both were unsuccessful. In total, about 50 face and 100 hand transplants were performed in the world. However, it has never been possible for a patient to have both transplants successfully at the same time.

The transplant operation can be easily thwarted due to infections, vascular insufficiency after the vessels have closed again, or the patient's body rejects the new organ.

Note that, Joe Dimeo fell asleep behind the wheel on his way home from work late in July 2018, resulting in an accident. He lost control, and the car hit the curb, flipping over before bursting into flames. Joe woke up in hospital about three months after the accident. As a result of the fire, 80% of his body was burnt. During this period, he performed about 20 reconstructive operations.

A suitable donor was found only in August 2020. The operation lasted 23 hours. Now Joe can eat alone, wash his hands and even play billiards.
