Bacteriophage viruses (microbial-eating organisms, viruses that infect and destroy bacteria) found in the ecosystems of the Russian Arctic will be used to fight bacterial infections that are resistant to existing antibiotics.

Due to the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria in hospitals during the coronavirus pandemic, new types of antibiotics should be developed as an alternative to classic antibiotics to fight infections. According to scientists, according to the results of expeditions to Antarctica, bacteriophages are found in large numbers in the habitats of birds, including penguins, and in freshwater lakes.
