They grew a small living brain inside the biochip

Using three-dimensional printing, scientists have grown a mini-brain from a human cell. Although this organoid does not have the functionality of a perfect organ, it is a convenient platform for monitoring the growth and development of nerve cells.

During the experiment, scientists used a new technology based on microfluidics: in this case, nutrients are delivered through very small tubes. The three-dimensional printer allows you to reduce the cost of production of biochips with live cells, channels and holes. Cultivation bins on the market have some disadvantages, such as they are not suitable for working with some microscopes, and the nutrients needed for cell growth do not reach the organelles.

The results of the study showed that the new biochips printed on a 3D printer have a much higher chance of surviving brain cells for a week than conventional chips.

Such a mechanism also allows to create a completely isolated form of the model of interaction of pathogens (including coronaviruses) with human organelles.
