Honorary member of ANAS, member of RAS Zhores Ivanovich Alferov 85 years old

Zhores Ivanovich Alferov was born March 15, 1930 in Vitebsk (Belarus). In 1952 he graduated from the Faculty of Electronics Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute. Defended PhD in engineering (1961), Dr. physics-math (1970), gained the title of Professor (LETI) - since 1972. Since 1953, Zhores works in the Physical-Technical Institute. Currently holds the post of director of the institute. From 1990 to 1991 - vice-president of the USSR Chairman of the Presidium of the Leningrad Scientific Center, from 1991 to present - vice-president of RAS, chairman of the Presidium of the St. Petersburg Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Zhores Ivanovich Alferov - one of the largest Russian scientists in the field of physics and technology of semiconductors, his work became widely known and recognized worldwide in textbooks. Author of over 500 scientific papers, including 3 monographs and more than 50 inventions.

For high achievements Alferov was awarded the honorary titles: Russian Academy of Sciences, the University of Havana (Cuba, 1987); Franklin Institute (USA, 1971); Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland, 1988); National Academy of Engineering (USA, 1990); National Academy of Sciences (USA, 1990); Metrological Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg, 1994); Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus (1995); Academy of Science and Technology of Korea (1995); Society of Physics and Technology of Semiconductor Pakistan (1996); International Academy of Refrigeration (1997); Optical Society of America (1997); International Academy of Ecology, Man and Nature; Institute of General and Nuclear Physics, Russian Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” (1998), St. Petersburg Humanitarian University (1998).

Zhores Ivanovich Alferov was awarded the Order of Lenin, the October Revolution, Red Banner of Labor, “Badge of Honor”, “Merit for the Fatherland” III and II degrees, medals of the USSR and the Russian Federation. In 2000, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Zhores Alferov Nobel Prize in physics.

Alferov established the Foundation for the Support of Education and Science to support talented young students, facilitating professional development, encourage creative activity in research in priority areas of science. The first contribution to the Fund was made Jaures Alferov from the Nobel Prize.

For his work “Fundamental study of the formation and properties of heterostructures with quantum dots and the creation of lasers based on them” Alferov and a team of scientists working with him, were awarded the 2002 State Prize.

In 2004 Zh.Alferov was elected an honorary member of ANAS.
