On March 4, a meeting was held at the Presidium of ANAS with the renowned mathematician, Doctor of Mathematical Sciences, Professor Kamal Soltanov.
The meeting was attended by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, members of the Presidium of ANAS, member of Milli Majlis Sabina Salmanova, hero of the Patriotic War Zaur Huseynov, members of the Presidium administration of ANAS, employees of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Ministry of Science and Education, as well as representatives from Baku State University, members of the media, and other relevant individuals.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli delivered a speech at the meeting underlining that the purpose of the event was to become acquainted with the advancements made by renowned mathematician, Professor Kamal Soltanov regarding the long-unsolved Navier-Stokes equations and to introduce them to society. He said that the issue Professor Kamal Soltanov has been working on is one of the global problems and his claim is of great importance.
The head of ANAS noted that Azerbaijani scientists rarely claim to solve global scientific issues, due to a lack of confidence in themselves. As a result, only four applications from Azerbaijan have been recorded for the Nobel Prize in recent years. To break this myth, and instill self-confidence, he recalled that the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences organized an international scientific conference titled “Lessons of the Path leading to the Nobel Prize: Myths, Realities, Achievements, and Challenges”. He emphasized that Azerbaijan has given the world outstanding figures, great poets and writers, and prominent scientists. Therefore, today, Azerbaijani scholars and intellectuals should not hesitate to engage in solving the global scientific problems. The initiative of Professor Kamal Soltanov, who worked in Türkiye for many years, is widely discussed around the world today.
The academician mentioned that today’s meeting will not only introduce the scientist’s academic achievements to Azerbaijani society but also provide encouragement to our scholars to pursue significant scientific endeavors.
Fariz Imranov, Head of the “Electronic Academy” Department of the Presidium administration of ANAS, PhD in Mathematics, Associate Professor, spoke about Professor Kamal Soltanov’s scientific work. He said that Professor Kamal Soltanov received his higher education at Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University), then he completed his postgraduate studies in Moscow Power Engineering Institute, and later worked at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics and since then, he has been working on solving this problem. Fariz Imranov noted that in 2003, the scholar was invited to Hacettepe University of Türkiye, where he successfully continued his work, not only training young specialists but also engaging in the theory of mathematics. Today, the results of Professor Kamal Soltanov’s research are widely applied.
Fariz Imranov said that significant findings of Professor Kamal Soltanov on the Navier-Stokes equations have been discussed for many years. Finally, in 2024 the scientist’s scientific result was accepted for publication as an article and was published. He said that it is a great achievement of Azerbaijani science.
Professor Kamal Soltanov, who spoke next, expressed his gratitude to the leadership of ANAS for organizing the meeting and gave a presentation on his scientific result he had achieved. He shared that he had been working for over 40 years on Dirichlet problem set for the Navier-Stokes equations. These equations are the fundamental mathematical model of hydrodynamics and since fluids are everywhere in life, studying them is one of the most important issues. He also noted that this problem is one of the seven millennium problems set by the Clay Mathematics Institute of the USA, and many well-known scientists are working on it worldwide.
“In 2015, I realized that I had solved the problem, and based on the results I obtained, I prepared an article and uploaded it to the 'arxiv.org' website. To solve this problem, I used a completely different method. Starting in 2020, I sent the article to all well-known scientists around the world who were researching these equations, as well as to all high-ranking journals, one after another. From the middle of 2023, responses started coming in from some journals, and it became clear that they were hesitant to publish the article. Finally, in the fall of 2024, it was published in the “Russian Journal of Mathematical Physics” at 'Springer'.”-said Professor Kamal Soltanov.
He also emphasized that these equations play an important role as a mathematical model in studying many real-life processes, including in synergetics, meteorology, turbulence research, ecology, and other fields.
After his presentation, Professor Kamal Soltanov answered the questions of Academician Arif Hashimov, Academician Yusif Mammadov, and Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Abdurrahim Guliyev.
Later, the Vice President of ANAS, Academician Rasim Aliguliyev, the Head of the Department at Baku State University, Academician Yusif Mammadov, the Academic Secretary of ANAS, Academician Arif Hashimov, and Professor Kamal Soltanov’s brother, Associate Professor Rafael Soltanov, spoke at the meeting. They said that the scholar had dedicated his entire life to the development of the field of mathematics, and that many of his scientific research results were accepted and applied internationally. It was noted that Professor Kamal Soltanov’s scientific results related to the Navier-Stokes equations are the outcome of many years of intense scientific work and deserve high recognition.
In his closing speech, Academician Isa Habibbeyli emphasized that Professor Kamal Soltanov’s claim regarding the Navier-Stokes equations would bring forth new ideas, perspectives, and challenges in the field of mathematics of Azerbaijan. He noted that the works of today’s researchers in mathematics in Azerbaijan, which has a rich history, remain among the most referenced fields of science in the country.
“Professor Kamal Soltanov’s confidence aligns with the reforms carried out at the Academy, and the publication of his results related to the Navier-Stokes equations in a prestigious scientific journal is of great scientific importance,”-said academician Isa Habibbeyli, wishing him success in his future scientific work.
At the end, the guest was presented with books published by ANAS as gifts, and commemorative photos were taken.
