On May 12, a republican scientific conference titled “Outstanding Figures of Azerbaijani Philosophy-Magsad Sattarov,” dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the prominent philosopher, corresponding member of ANAS, Magsad Sattarov, was held with the joint organization of the Presidium of ANAS and the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology.

The event organized at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology was opened with a welcoming speech by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli. He underlined that, in light of the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated March 18, 2025, on the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, a series of events covering various directions and topics are held at ANAS. Among these, the anniversaries of prominent scientists whose lives and scientific activities were connected with the Academy are also celebrated. Academician Isa Habibbeyli emphasized that organizing jubilee events dedicated to great figures of science is an expression of respect for their work and contributions and it also represents the historical stages of ANAS’s development. He said that today’s conference, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of corresponding member of ANAS Magsad Sattarov, holds significant importance as part of the Academy’s jubilee celebrations.

The head of ANAS mentioned that the distinguished philosopher Magsad Sattarov’s work was directly connected with the Academy. He worked for many years at the academy and defended both his candidate and doctoral dissertations at the Institute of Philosophy and Law. As the head of the Philosophy Department of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, Magsad Sattarov made significant contributions to the training of young scientists.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli highlighted that corresponding member of ANAS Magsad Sattarov lived and worked during the Soviet period, and saw the society from within and, as early as the 1970s, deeply understood the processes taking place within it.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that in 1964, during the period of socialism and communism, Magsad Sattarov successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on “The Formation and Establishment of the Theory of Scientific Atheism in Azerbaijan”. Magsad Sattarov had a strong civic position, thought about society, and encouraged youth to deeply study the ongoing processes in society and serve Azerbaijanism.

“Although Magsad Sattarov produced works in line with the ideals of his time, he was the first to realize the totalitarian nature of that society, sensed its collapse, and passed on his knowledge to the younger generation.”-he said.

At the end of his speech, Academician Isa Habibbeyli talked about the merits of Magsad Sattarov’s books “Philosophy and Ideology’ and “Thoughts on Man and Society”, and emphasized the importance of studying the philosopher’s rich heritage more deeply in light of today’s realities, and in the context of Azerbaijanism.

Then, the Director of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Professor Ilham Mammadzade, presented his report titled “Philosophical Views of Magsad Sattarov,” providing information about the scholar’s scientific activities and contributions to the field of philosophy.

He said that since late 1950s, Magsad Sattarov permanently tied his fate with the Institute of Philosophy. Having led the Department of Philosophy for more than thirty years, Sattarov consistently showed a caring attitude towards young and promising scholars. He wrote thirty books, monographs, and numerous articles dedicated to various current issues of philosophy, religion, ontology, epistemology, and ethics.

The Deputy Director of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, as well as the heads of departments of the institute, also delivered reports. Professor Rabiat Aslanova, in her speech talked about the philosophical legacy of Magsad Sattarov.
