On May 29, the “ANAS-80 Panel” was held in the Academy Park within the framework of the 4th Turkic World Literature and Book Festival.
The event was attended by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, members of the Presidium of ANAS, heads of departments of the Presidium administration of ANAS, directors and employees of scientific institutions and organizations of ANAS, as well as representatives of other institutions.
The event was moderated by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Eshgana Babayeva, a staff member of the Nizami Ganjavi Institute of Literature of ANAS.
The panel was opened with an introductory speech by Academician Isa Habibbeyli, who underlined that the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated March 18, 2025, on the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, is an expression of the high value our state places on Azerbaijani science, scientists, and intellectuals.
Speaking about the history of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli informed the panel participants that the National Academy of Sciences has passed an honorable and historic path over the past 80 years, and our scientists have made incomparable contributions to the development of our state through their scientific research. Underlining that the initial foundations of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences were laid with the establishment of the Azerbaijan Research and Study Society in 1923, the academician said that this institution was later transformed into the Azerbaijan State Scientific Research Institute, and with the establishment of the Azerbaijan division of the Transcaucasian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1932, the first scientific organization with academic status was founded in Azerbaijan.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that with the completion of the organizational processes of science, the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR was finally established on March 27, 1945, the first president of the Academy and the members of the Presidium were elected, and the first Charter was adopted. He pointed out that the period from 1945 to 1969 is characterized as the stage of the Academy’s establishment and the formation of its scientific and organizational foundations.
The head of ANAS pointed out that during the years 1969-1982 prominent statesman Heydar Aliyev paid special attention to the development of science, just as in all other fields, and that this period is considered a renaissance in the 80-year history of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. He noted that from 1983 to 1993, as in other fields of Azerbaijani society, a gradual period of decline and deterioration was observed in the Academy of Sciences and eventually, during 1991-1993, these processes reached a crisis point. With the return of National Leader Heydar Aliyev to political power, both Azerbaijan and the Academy were saved. He mentioned that during this period, the Great Leader paid even greater attention to the Academy and our intellectuals, granting the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences the status “National” in 2001, and this stage is characterized as a period of reorganization and the establishment of the National Academy of Sciences.
According to the academician, the years during which President Ilham Aliyev continues to lead the Republic of Azerbaijan with great success can be divided into two phases in terms of the development of the Academy: the first phase, the period of modernization of the Academy (2003-2022), and the second phase, the stage of renewal and reforms that began in October 2022.
He noted that taking into account the tasks set by President Ilham Aliyev, the priorities of our state, and the challenges of modern global science, many new departments have been established within ANAS through internal resources, and research is conducted in these departments on Karabakh, Western Azerbaijan, and the Turkic world. The work is also continuing on two important directions: the “Heydar Aliyev Encyclopedia” and the “Western Azerbaijan Encyclopedia”. The Academy is putting more focus on developing electronic science and digital technologies.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that one of the main achievements at this stage is that, for the first time in its 80-year history of development, the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences became a member of prestigious international organizations such as the International Science Council, the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA), the Eurasian Universities Union, and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) and it defends the interests of our state in the international scientific community.
It was noted that with the adoption of the Development Concept and Roadmap of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences for 2025-2030, the future goals of Azerbaijani science have been determined.
In addition, it was underlined that support is also provided for the development of science in the regions, and that a number of reforms have been carried out in the Academy’s divisions and regional scientific centers, taking into account the priorities of our state and the challenges of modern world science.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli underlined that, in order to ensure the high-level implementation of the President’s Order dated March 18, 2025, on the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, the 80th anniversary of ANAS is also planned to be celebrated in friendly and brotherly countries.
At the end of his speech, the head of ANAS noted that today the National Academy of Sciences successfully continues its activities following the ideals of the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev, the instructions and tasks of President Ilham Aliyev, and the priorities of the Azerbaijani state. Our scientists work tirelessly and diligently toward the development of our state and promotion of the achievemnnets.
Serkhan Khaveri, Doctor of Philology and Head of the Science and Education Department of the Presidium administartion of ANAS, and Fuzuli Gurbanov, Doctor of Philosophy and Head of Department at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of ANAS also made speeches. They spoke about the honorable path of ANAS during 80 years, the attention and care of our state towards the Azerbaijani science and intellectuals, and highlighted the recent achievements in the renewed Academy.
