A meeting of the Presidium of ANAS was held at Karabakh University for the first time.
Prior to the meeting, a scientific conference was held at Karabakh University jointly organized by the Ministry of Science and Education and ANAS, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The conference was held under the theme “The Karabakhname Tradition in the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the Modern Period.”
At the conference, Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev and Rector of Karabakh University Shahin Bayramov delivered opening speeches, congratulated the staff of ANAS on the 80th anniversary of the academy, and wished success to the participants of the scientific conference.
President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli gave a comprehensive presentation on the topic “Issues of Studying Karabakh and the Great Return Movement in the Activities of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences”. Following this, directors of scientific-research institutes of ANAS presented reports on various scientific fields.
More than 1,200 books were donated to the library of Karabakh University by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, along with a painting dedicated to the founders of the Academy and its modern development.
Following the event, the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, members of the Presidium, and department heads delivered lessons in various classrooms to Karabakh University students across 13 specialties. After the lessons, numerous questions of students were answered, and commemorative photos were taken with them.
The meeting of the Presidium was attended by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, members of the Presidium, heads of departments of the Presidium administration, and heads of the Academy’s scientific research institutions and organizations.
The President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli opened the meeting with an introductory speech, calling the event held at Karabakh University in Khankendi city a significant historical occasion. He highlighted the importance of establishing relations of cooperation between the Academy and Karabakh University in the fields of science and education. The conference held at Karabakh University in light of the Order by President Ilham Aliyev on the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences marked the beginning of scientific cooperation. He also expressed confidence that the Academy would make a significant contribution to the Great Return movement and the development of science under the new conditions.
Speaking about the implementation of the Presidential Decree dated November 16, 2022, on the approval of the “First State Program on the Great Return to the territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan liberated from occupation,” Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that all tasks outlined in the program had been successfully fulfilled. He underlined that the scope of scientific research in the territories liberated from occupation was expanded, within the framework of the “Year of Shusha,” numerous monographs, books, and articles were published by ANAS, scientific conferences were held, and exhibitions were organized.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli emphasized that over the past period, scientific research in Karabakh was mainly conducted by the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS and significant scientific results of historical importance had been obtained during the archaeological excavations.
Following the discussions, a corresponding decision was adopted.
Then, the issue of ensuring the implementation of comprehensive scientific research in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur was discussed. The head of ANAS mentioned that comprehensive research should be conducted in the territories liberated from occupation by the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, and in parallel studies in other scientific fields should also be organized. He emphasized the importance of conducting research also in fields such as toponymy, ethnography, anthropology, philosophy, folklore, linguistics, manuscript studies, architecture, and seismology. He stressed the importance for complex research across all scientific directions and gave the necessary instructions to achieve this. Academician Isa Habibbeyli also added that during the implementation of the Second State Program on the Great Return, special attention would be given to expanding interdisciplinary connections.
Academician Rasim Aliguliyev, corresponding member Gurban Yetirmishli, Professor Ilham Mammadzade, Professor Nadir Mammadli, and Associate Professor Farhad Guliyev shared their proposals and views during their speeches. Following the discussions, a corresponding decision was adopted by the Presidium.
The next issue brought up for discussion concerned the approval of the final version of the Western Azerbaijan Encyclopedia wordlist. Speaking on the matter, Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that the discussions related to the wordlist were held several times with representatives of the Western Azerbaijan Community and certain clarifications were made.
After extensive discussions, the improved final version of the Western Azerbaijan Encyclopedia was approved. Team of authors was identified for the preparation of the materials, and relevant instructions were given.
Subsequently, the sketches for the “80th Anniversary of ANAS” badge were reviewed, and an appropriate design was selected and approved.
At the meeting, in line with the challenges of the modern era and through internal resources and existing staff positions, decisions were made regarding the establishment of new departments: a Department of Digital Oriental Studies at the Ziya Bunyadov Institute of Oriental Studies, a Department of Applied Ethnography and History of Culinary Culture at the Abbasgulu Agha Bakikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology, a Department of Digital Folklore and Netnographic Analysis at the Institute of Folklore, etc. A decision was also made to establish new departments of History and Epigraphy and Archaeology and Ethnography at the Sheki Regional Scientific Center.
Academician Dilgam Taghiyev, Academician Rasim Aliguliyev, Academician Irada Huseynova, Academician Govhar Bakhshaliyeva, Academician Arif Hashimov, Academician Teymur Karimli, Corresponding Member of ANAS Ertegin Salamzade, Director of the Institute of History and Ethnology Professor Karim Shukurov, Director of the Institute of Folklore Associate Professor Hikmat Guliyev, and Director of Elm Publishing House Associate Professor Sabuhi Gahramanov participated in the discussions and shared their proposals.
Doctor of Philology Elchin Ibrahimov, Head of the Science Department of Karabakh University spoke about the prospects for mutual scientific cooperation between the university he represents and ANAS.
