A solemn event was held in Ankara, Türkiye, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
Before the event, President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, along with representatives of ANAS, the Turkish Academy of Sciences, and the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Ankara, visited the Heydar Aliyev Park in Ankara. They laid flowers at the monument of the architect of the Azerbaijani statehood, National Leader Heydar Aliyev.
The solemn opening ceremony held at the Ankara University, organized at the initiative of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) and with the support of Ankara University, was attended by a delegation led by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, as well as representatives of various international and local scientific institutions and organizations, higher education institutions, diplomats, and scientists.
At the opening ceremony, Rector of Ankara University, Professor Necdet Ünüvar, reminded that the title of honorary doctor had once been awarded to the National Leader Heydar Aliyev in this educational institution.
Emphasizing that the cooperation between the two brotherly countries successfully continues also in the fields of science and education, the Rector expressed his gratitude to the leadership of ANAS for its contribution to this process.
“Our cooperation in the fields of science and education is successfully continuing in the spirit of the saying ‘One nation, two states.’ The successful policies of our leaders, Ilham Aliyev and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, illuminate our path. I wish for our countries to remain united always and to be at the top,” said Necdet Ünüvar, who also mentioned the dual diploma program as an example of successful cooperation with Azerbaijan. He congratulated the leadership and the entire staff of ANAS on its 80th anniversary.
Then, President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, delivered a presentation titled “Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences: 80 Years in the Service of Science.” In his speech, he underlined that since its establishment, the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences has passed a path rich in significant scientific achievements. Today, in line with modern realities and the calls of the Head of State, the Academy continues its phase of renewal and reforms through its multifaceted activities, achieving important scientific results.
“This event holds great significance within the framework of the implementation of the Order of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. For the first time in its history, the Academy’s anniversary is being celebrated outside the country, in brotherly Türkiye. This important step successfully contributes to strengthening our brotherhood and solidarity. The expression ‘One nation, two states,’ by National Leader Heydar Aliyev, is the proof of the unity demonstrated to the world by Azerbaijan and Türkiye, as well as the unbreakable unity of the Turkic world countries,” the academician emphasized.
Speaking about the attention and care of National Leader Heydar Aliyev for Azerbaijani science, Academician Isa Habibbeyli underlined that the renaissance period of Azerbaijani science is connected with the name and activities of the National Leader. The policy of Heydar Aliyev also served the brotherhood between Azerbaijan and Türkiye.”
The head of ANAS said that the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences has actively participated in the successful implementation of state policy in the field of science over the past years. Through research conducted in the fields of humanities and social sciences, the Academy has contributed to society’s acquisition of new knowledge and the enhancement of its scientific and cultural level.
The President of ANAS emphasized that Azerbaijan and Türkiye demonstrate unity and solidarity not only in domestic politics and bilateral relations but also on the international stage.
He expressed confidence that the event would make a significant contribution to further strengthening cooperation with scientific and higher education institutions of Türkiye and to the formation of new joint projects.
Referring to the words by President Ilham Aliyev during his inauguration ceremony, “We have no other family. Our family is the Turkic world,” the academician underlined that Azerbaijan has entered a new stage in the development of the science of Turkology, which has rich traditions, and in its relations with the Turkic world.
In his speech, Professor Muzaffer Şeker, President of the Turkish Academy of Sciences, highlighted the unshakable unity between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, noting that in recent years the scientific cooperation between TÜBA and ANAS has expanded significantly. Emphasizing the importance of the strong foundations laid between the scientific institutions of the two brotherly countries, Muzaffer Şeker expressed his confidence that their joint activity would lead to important scientific achievements.
Secretary General of TÜRKSOY, Sultan Raev, former Ambassador of Türkiye to Azerbaijan, Professor Cahit Bağcı, and the First Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Ankara, Aygun Gojayeva, delivered speeches during the event. They spoke about the importance of cooperation between the two countries in the field of science and education, just as in all other fields. They emphasized the further expansion of mutual relations among the scientific institutions and organizations of the entire Turkic world and extended their congratulations on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of ANAS.
At the event, it was announced that Academician Isa Habibbeyli, President of ANAS, was elected an honorary member of TÜBA. The honorary membership diploma was presented to Academician Isa Habibbeyli by TÜBA President, Professor Muzaffer Şeker.
After the solemn opening ceremony, the documentary film “The Temple of Science of Azerbaijan” was screened. The participants watched the film with great interest.
The event then continued with panel discussions.
In the first panel, moderated by Professor Hami Aksoy, Head of the Department of Science and Technology Policies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, Professor Derya Örs, Chairman of the Atatürk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History, Professor Yüksel Özgen, Head of the Turkish Historical Society, Professor Osman Mert, Head of the Turkish Language Association, and the prominent Turkologist, Professor Ahmet Bican Ercilasun, delivered presentations. They spoke about the historical traditions of Azerbaijan-Türkiye relations and the role of ANAS in this field.
In the second panel, moderated by Professor Ayşegül Komsuoğlu, Rector of Nişantaşı University in Istanbul, Professor Ayça Ergün from the Middle East Technical University, Professor Mehmet Akif Kireççi, member of the Presidential Security and Foreign Policies Council, Director of the Economic Cooperation Organization Educational Institute, and Professor at Ankara Social Sciences University, as well as Professor Mehmet Rıza Heyet, lecturer at Ankara University also delivered their presentations. During the discussions special attention was paid to topics such as a common alphabet for the Turkic world, a shared future, and scientific unity. They also spoke about the prospects of cooperation with the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. They especially emphasized the historical significance of celebrating the 80th anniversary of ANAS in brotherly Türkiye.
At the end, gifts were mutually presented, and commemorative photos were taken.
The Azerbaijani delegation led by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, also included Academician Ibrahim Guliyev, Vice President of ANAS, and Associate Professor Agahuseyn Shukurov, PhD in Philology, Head of the Public Relations, Press and Information Department of the Presidium Administration of ANAS.
