Russian scientists have created a nuclear battery that can operate for 50 years

Russian scientists from National research technological University “MISIS” presented prototype nuclear batteries that can operate for 50 years. About it reports a press-service of the Institute.

“A group of scientists nust “MISIS” presented prototypes of nuclear battery that uses as an energy material is an isotope of Nickel-63. The stated uptime is 50 years. The scope of products, from cardio implants to spacecraft for exploration of deep space”, reports Misa.

Scientists under the leadership of Professor Yuri Parkhomenko has developed a technology to manufacture energy converters of beta radiation into electrical energy on the basis of single crystal piezoelectric materials for use in Autonomous beta-voltaic batteries, AC.

As the electron source in the nuclear battery using isotope “Nickel-63”, the half-life of 100 years, and its radiation, as noted, does not harm living organisms.

“The use of pulsed power sources (they accumulate and pay the charge) makes it possible to overcome the limitations caused by the small capacity of beta-voltaic nuclear battery. Thus, in the pulse mode one beta – voltaic element capable of producing power up to 1 mW/cm. 3. At low specific energy capacity of the battery material collected on their basis capable of providing continuous output power of 10-100 NW/cm3 is sufficient to provide power to cardiospectra”, – said Parkhomenko.
