On October 15, a conference titled “Challenges in the Fields of Energy, Food, Environment, and Climate Security”was held in Baku.
Speaking at the opening of the event, President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), academician Isa Habibbayli, noted the significance of the conference and described the organization of such a prestigious international event in Azerbaijan as a logical and timely decision. He emphasized that the theme of the conference aligns with the main provisions of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29) program, which Azerbaijan successfully hosted at a high level last year. He added that today’s event serves as a continuation of the ideas and objectives of COP29 in the scientific sphere.
Academician Isa Habibbayli stated that holding such a globally significant event as COP29 in Azerbaijan under the patronage and participation of President Ilham Aliyev is a logical outcome of the country’s contribution to the strategy of transitioning to a green economy, as well as to environmental protection and climate change mitigation at the national, regional, and global levels. According to him, COP29 has influenced various aspects of public life, economy, and scientific thought in Azerbaijan. This world-class international event has become an important page in both the history of our country and the global history of science.
The ANAS President highlighted that the “green energy zones” established by the Head of State in Nakhchivan, Karabakh, and East Zangazur are successfully continuing their operations.
He further emphasized that significant state programs are being implemented in Azerbaijan to promote the development of green energy. Azerbaijan, he noted, ranks among the leading countries not only within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) but also globally in the use of alternative energy sources. Alongside the country’s internal potential, the attraction of foreign investment as part of the state policy in this field will accelerate the development of the sector. In the near future, Azerbaijan will become not only an exporter of oil and gas but also an exporter of alternative energy sources.
According to Academician Isa Habibbayli, “The State Program on the Use of Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources approved by President Ilham Aliyev will transform our country into one of the world’s states with great potential in this field.”
He added that Azerbaijan, located at the crossroads of different cultures and continents, not only exploits, produces, and exports diverse energy resources but also conducts their scientific study and assessment. Large scientific schools specializing in alternative energy sources, environmental issues, food, environmental and climate security have been established in the country. Outstanding scientists have devoted their lives to developing these fields, and research continues in this direction. For more than half a century, these issues have been studied and advanced at various research institutions of the Ministry of Science and Education, with the results presented to the public as scientifically grounded realities of Azerbaijan.
In conclusion, Academician Isa Habibbayli expressed confidence that this international conference, attended by more than 140 scientists from 14 countries, will contribute to a deeper study of Azerbaijan’s experience, the establishment of effective scientific cooperation, and the development of joint projects and new ideas. He also wished success to the participants of the conference.
