Academician Irada Huseynova: “Global Climate Change Increases the Strategic Responsibility of Science”

Today, we are entering a new stage – the era of a second “green revolution” that is environmentally clean and technologically efficient.

These remarks were made by Vice-President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and Director General of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies, Academician Irada Huseynova, during the presentation of the book “COP29: Global and National Challenges, the Role of Science” at ANAS.

Academician Irada Huseynova stated that COP29 will go down in history not only as a platform for environmental and climate diplomacy but also as a space where global scientific integration, knowledge, and innovation converge. She emphasized that Azerbaijan’s hosting of this prestigious event is a vivid reflection of the country’s growing influence in global ecosystem management, the “green transformation” course shaped under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, and the deep integration of national science into state policy.

The scientist noted that the book “COP29: Global and National Challenges, the Role of Science” was created through the collection, analysis, and synthesis of scientific and analytical works dedicated to the goals, objectives, outcomes, and challenges of COP29, which holds strategic importance for both the national and global scientific communities. She highlighted that this publication also reflects the synthesis and integration of national science with the international scientific space.

Academician Irada Huseynova pointed out that global climate change, biodiversity protection, and issues of water, food, and energy security further increase the strategic responsibility of science today. In this regard, she underlined that the presented publication is rich in valuable scientific, theoretical, and practical insights.

She emphasized the particular importance of environmental education, climate-conscious behavior, and the active involvement of young scientists in the post-COP29 period.

According to her, science has already transitioned from the phase of “science for science’s sake” to that of “science for a sustainable future.” Today, science is not only an observer but also a guiding and predictive force that provides a scientific basis for decision-making. She added that the presented book systematizes the numerous activities carried out within ANAS during the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World” and COP29, encompassing information on more than 30 books and monographs, as well as over 50 scientific conferences, round tables, seminars, and exhibitions.

As Academician Huseynova noted, as emphasized in President Ilham Aliyev’s document “Azerbaijan 2030: National Priorities for Socio-Economic Development”, the development strategy based on a clean environment and a “green growth” model is a priority direction of state policy, and science forms its fundamental pillar. “We believe that ANAS and other scientific institutions of the country will further strengthen scientific coordination in this area and incorporate the scientific legacy of COP29 as a research platform into the national strategy for ecological security and innovative development,” Academician Irada Huseynova concluded.
