An event dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) was held at the National Library of Azerbaijan.
Opening the event, Professor Karim Tahirov, Director of the National Library, welcomed the guests and noted that the ceremony, organized on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of ANAS, was a logical continuation of the jubilee celebration attended by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. Professor Tahirov emphasized the close scientific and cultural ties between the National Library and ANAS, noting that a series of events and book presentations had been organized at the library in connection with the jubilee, and that today’s event marked the conclusion of this series.
He added that in recent years, around 30 percent of the books added to the library’s collection were scientific works published by ANAS, and that the library’s readers continually benefit from these publications. Professor Tahirov also highlighted that the National Library annually publishes several bibliographies, which play a significant role in the development of Azerbaijani science and in supporting the research activities of ANAS scholars.
On the occasion of the jubilee, the director presented ANAS with a facsimile copy of the rare manuscript of “Khamsa” by the prominent figure of classical Azerbaijani literature, Nizami Ganjavi, transcribed in 1378 and preserved at the Topkapı Palace Museum in Türkiye. He extended his congratulations on the 80th anniversary of ANAS and wished the Academy continued success in its future endeavors.
Academician Isa Habibbayli, President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, expressed gratitude on behalf of ANAS’s scholars and staff to Professor Karim Tahirov and the National Library for the high-level organization of the book exhibition dedicated to the anniversary. He noted that the participation and speech of President Ilham Aliyev at the jubilee ceremony of ANAS set important tasks before the scientific community, intellectuals, and society at large. The President’s remarks on issues such as artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and cybersecurity in line with the challenges of the 21st century should, he said, become focal points for scientists and the younger generation, as these fields are key to ensuring the sustainable development of independent Azerbaijan.
Academician Habibbayli described the National Library as the “second Academy” of the country, emphasizing its role as the center of bibliographic science and as a repository of valuable scientific works and rare books. He underlined the long-standing and ongoing cooperation between ANAS and the National Library, noting that the exhibition exemplified this partnership. The academician stressed that the jubilee of ANAS was not only a celebration for scientists but also for the nation, librarians, and readers—the new generation of knowledge seekers.
At the event, Professor Muzaffer Şeker, President of the Turkish Academy of Sciences, and Academician Roin Metreveli, President of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, congratulated Academician Isa Habibbayli on the 80th anniversary of ANAS and wished the Academy further success in its future activities.
As part of the event, the National Library staff presented an electronic information database and virtual exhibition titled “Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences – 80.”
At the end of the ceremony, guests viewed the traditional book exhibition “Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences – 80,” opened in honor of this historic and significant occasion.
