Centenary of the First Turkological Congress Discussed in Depth

President of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbayli, has met with the President of the International Turkic Academy, academician Shakhin Mustafayev.

At the meeting held at the Presidium of ANAS, an extensive exchange of views took place regarding preparations for the 100th anniversary of the First Turkological Congress.

Highlighting the significance of President Ilham Aliyev’s decree dated October 22, 2025, “On Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the First Turkological Congress,” academician Isa Habibbayli said that marking the centenary of the Congress carries special importance for Azerbaijan’s scientific and cultural community. He recalled that the First Turkological Congress was held on February 26 – March 6, 1926, in the Grand Assembly Hall of the Presidium of ANAS, noting that this historical heritage still serves as an ideological source for Turkological research today.

Academician Isa Habibbayli stated that on December 3, broad discussions were held at the Mirza Fatali Akhundzade National Library of Azerbaijan with the participation of Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev, Minister of Culture Adil Karimli, and other intellectuals regarding the 100th anniversary of the First Turkological Congress. He noted that the main jubilee event is expected to be held in late June – early July next year and emphasized the particular importance of organizing an event in Kazakhstan as well.

The ANAS president said that, within the framework of the centenary of the First Turkological Congress, more than ten thematic events will be organized across various institutes of the Academy, with participants from different Turkic-speaking countries. Academician Isa Habibbayli stressed that Turkology is not limited to Turkic languages; fields such as history, ethnography, literature, terminology, and philosophy also constitute its core directions. Therefore, it is essential that the jubilee events be implemented comprehensively, on a broad scale, and in a substantive manner.

During the meeting, academician Isa Habibbayli also praised the translation and publication in Kazakh of the book “History of the Patriotic War: The Factor of Personality,” produced through a joint project of the Baku City Executive Authority and the Institute of History and Ethnology of ANAS, and published by the International Turkic Academy. He emphasized the importance of holding a presentation for this publication. He noted that the book extensively highlights the historical role of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev as a leader who ensured the country’s comprehensive development, national unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, analyzes the key directions of the Commander-in-Chief’s victory strategy, and examines the chronicle of victory as well as the diplomatic aspects of the Second Karabakh War on a scholarly basis.

Later, academician Shakhin Mustafayev stated that the 100th anniversary of the First Turkological Congress is not only a legacy of our culture but also a significant event in strengthening scientific, cultural, and political ties within the Turkic world. He noted that the revival of the Congress and the activities planned within the jubilee framework will further reinforce cooperation among Turkic states in areas such as a unified alphabet, language, historical and cultural heritage, and humanitarian collaboration.

In conclusion, an agreement was reached to further expand mutual cooperation between the two institutions across several scientific fields.
