On December 25, an event dedicated to the digitization of archival documents was held at the Main Building of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), organized by the Scientific Heritage Department of the Presidium Administration.
The event was attended by President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli; members of the ANAS Presidium; heads of departments of the Presidium Administration; Head of the Department for Publication, Use and Information Support of Archival Documents of the National Archives Administration, Natiq Eminov; staff of the Scientific Heritage Department; representatives responsible for archival affairs at ANAS scientific institutions and organizations; and other relevant participants.
First, the event participants viewed the materials preserved in the collections of the Scientific Heritage Department.
Opening the event with an introductory speech, President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, noted that in 2024 the Presidium Administration and institutions of ANAS were connected to the unified Electronic Document Management System operating nationwide. He also stated that efforts to establish an electronic library at ANAS have been expanded. In addition, he emphasized that the Digital Academy, Artificial Intelligence and Electronic Services Department of the Presidium Administration has digitized the scientometric indicators of scholars and created their profiles on academic social networks. Academician Isa Habibbeyli also drew attention to the strengthening of the material and technical base of the ANAS “Elm” Publishing House.
As part of these measures, Academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that work on establishing an electronic archive at ANAS has also been carried out in recent years. He stated that the Academy’s archive reflects the intellectual potential of the country, and that many prominent figures, intellectuals, and statesmen of Azerbaijan worked here in the 20th century, leaving behind a rich heritage. He said that the archival collections are currently being reorganized in accordance with standards under the leadership of the Head of the Scientific Heritage Department of the Presidium Administration, Doctor of Historical Sciences Zemfira Hajiyeva, and that the next objective is the digitization of these documents. The ANAS President emphasized that this work is being implemented with the support of the National Archives Administration, whose staff have conducted training sessions for employees of the Scientific Heritage Department.
Then, Head of the Scientific Heritage Department of the Presidium Administration, Doctor of Historical Sciences Zemfira Hajiyeva, spoke about the work carried out over the past years in the field of archive development. She noted that for the first time during this period, personal archival collections of the Academy’s presidents were created, and nearly 20 books based on archival materials were published. Stating that the ElarScan equipment put into operation has accelerated the digitization of archival documents, Zemfira Hajiyeva emphasized the importance of strengthening archival work at ANAS scientific institutions and organizations as well.
Speaking next, Head of the Department for Publication, Use and Information Support of Archival Documents of the National Archives Administration, Natiq Eminov, spoke about the history of archival affairs in Azerbaijan. He noted that the Unified Electronic Archival Information System will be put into use after its regulations are approved, and that documents scanned in the ANAS archive will also be uploaded to this system.
At the event, Director of the Central Scientific Library Huseyn Huseynov and Chief Specialist of the Scientific Heritage Department of the Presidium Administration Ramin Hasanov also delivered speeches, providing detailed information on the work carried out.
At the end of the event, Academician Isa Habibbeyli issued relevant instructions regarding the digitization of archival documents.
