The Memory of Eminent Orientalist Aida Imanguliyeva Honored

On September 19, President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Academician Isa Habibbeyli, and the staff of the Institute of Oriental Studies named after academician Ziya Bunyadov of ANAS visited the grave of prominent orientalist scholar, educator, Doctor of Philological Sciences and Professor Aida Imanguliyeva, one of the distinguished figures Azerbaijan gave to world science in the 20th century. They paid deep respects to her memory and laid a wreath and bouquets of flowers at her grave.

Speaking at the memorial ceremony, Academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that the field of Arabic studies has developed significantly within Azerbaijani Oriental studies, and said that the literary studies aspect of this field was founded by prominent orientalist scholar Professor Aida Imanguliyeva. Academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that Aida Imanguliyeva’s contributions to the development of this field are invaluable, that she established a scholarly school in Azerbaijani Arabic studies, and that she opened a new path in the study of emigrant literature. The President of ANAS emphasized that today, the followers of Aida Imanguliyeva’s scholarly school continue this work, and that research on Arab emigrant literature is being conducted, dissertations and articles are being written, and books are being published at the Institute of Oriental Studies, the Institute of Literature, as well as other scientific and educational institutions of the country.

Acting Vice-President of ANAS and Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies named after academician Ziya Bunyadov, Academician Govhar Bakhshaliyeva, stated that prominent scholar Aida Imanguliyeva, who passed away 34 years ago on September 19, left an indelible mark on the development of Azerbaijani Oriental studies and made a significant contribution to global Arabic studies through her valuable works. She noted that Aida Imanguliyeva was the first Azerbaijani scholar to study the interactions and influence between Arab and Western literatures. Academician G. Bakhshaliyeva stated that during her tenure as Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Aida Imanguliyeva also demonstrated herself to be a skilled organizer of scientific work. G. Bakhshaliyeva noted that the loss of Aida Imanguliyeva was a great sorrow for Azerbaijani orientalists and that scholars continue to hold her cherished memory in high regard.

Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs of the Institute of Oriental Studies, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor Ruhangiz Jumshudlu; Head of the Department of Research and Publication of Written Monuments, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Mehdi Kazimov; and others spoke about Aida Imanguliyeva’s valuable scientific work and her care and support for young orientalists.
