International symposium dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the bone of Azikhantrop to be held

An international symposium "On the way of migration of people during the early Paleolithic period of the Caucasus" dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Azikhantrop's bone in the Azikh cave will be organized. The symposium will be held on November 5-7, 2018 at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS.

This issue was discussed on December 20 at a regular meeting of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

In his speech, Vice-President of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbayli, said that 50 years have passed since the discovery of the lower jaw of Azykhantrop in the Azikh cave in 1968 by the archaeologist Mammadali Huseynov.

He noted that, as a result of the research it was confirmed that the age of Azikhantrop is 400 thousand years, and the Kuruchay culture, which entered into scientific circulation, took its rightful place in science. The academician said that the artifacts discovered in recent years in the territory of Mingachevir and Gabala regions prove the wide distribution area of the Kuruchay culture and the fact that its research is still relevant today. The scientist also added that the illegal "Studies" conducted by Armenians in recent years in Karabakh and, in particular, in the Azikh cave, once again testify to the need for a scientific analysis of this paleolithic site and the artifacts discovered there and bringing the information to a broad scientific community.
