Geologist Day is celebrated in all CIS countries and practically all geological organizations of Russia.

The Geologist Day is traditionally held every year on the first Sunday of April. This professional holiday was established on March 31, 1966 by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR to mark the service of Soviet geologists.

According to www.calend.ru, the selection of early April as the time of the celebration is due to the end of the winter season and to the field studies of specialists in the field, as well as preparations for expeditions.
