The winners of the Isaac Pomeranchuk award, which is awarded annually to 2 theoretical physicists are Professor Giorgio Parisi of the Italian University of Sapienza and Lev Pitaevsky, Professor at the Russian Institute of Physical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Professor Parisi Prize was awarded for outstanding results in quantum field theory, statistical mechanics and in the theory of elementary particles. And Professor Pitaevsky - in recognition of his fundamental contribution to modern theoretical physics, including low-temperature physics, plasma physics and the physics of condensed matter.

In previous years, also was awarded famous scientists such as Valery Rubakov, Mikhail Shifman, Leonid Keldish, Leonard Susskind, Lev Okun, Alexander Polyakov, Freeman Dyson, Ludwig Faddeev, Juan Maldasena and many others.

Pomeranchuk award was established in 1999, the year of the 85th anniversary of the birth of the scientist. It is annually awarded to two outstanding theoretical physicists - one Russian and one foreign. In the early 1950's, Pomeranchuk laid the foundations of the theory of diffraction scattering of particles by nuclei. His name also includes the corresponding particle, the exchange of which is responsible for the weak growth of the total cross sections at high energies-the pomeron. Academician Pomeranchuk, together with the eminent Soviet physicist Lev Landau, founded the Department of Theoretical Physics at ITEP, thanks to which the Elementary Particle Physics School was established, which is still one of the leading in the world.
