Discovered a nine-thousand-year-old settlement in Tovuz

Tovuz Archaeological Expedition of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS continues archaeological research in the region.

According to the head of the department, PhD in history Farhad Guliyev, as a result of the researches, a 9,000-year-old settlement has been discovered in Tovuz. This once again proves that the most ancient human settlements in the South Caucasus exist in Azerbaijan.

The archeologist said that excavations were being carried out by local and foreign experts in that area and that an ancient village consisting of two layers had been discovered in more than half a hectare. He said that searches on 200 square meters on the first floor of the ancient village were continued.

According to F. Guliyev, during the excavations, more than a thousand items of pottery, copper residue, copper shotguns, and tools for plowing were found. The examples of material culture found here coincide with the Neolithic era.

The archaeologist noted that next year, archeologists from Japan, France, Turkey and Bulgaria will be involved in research.
