New technology will turn any window into surveillance camera

The team of Professor Rajesh Manama from the University of Utah have developed a technology for passive interception of light passing through ordinary glass, or equivalent. For example, almost every window is a lot of interesting things, but to capture this, we need to give him an active device: the camera. And the new technology allows to partially circumvent this limitation.

The prototype is Minoma looks like. At the end of the sheet of transparent plexiglass or glass attached simple optical sensor, all opposite faces glued over the reflective tape. We include in front of the glass a source image, for example, led a panel that displayed simple symbols. 99% of the light falling on the crystal under close to the right angles and goes on, but 1% is dissipated in the thickness of the material and the photons are fleeing to the edges of the plate. Here they are reflected from the tape and fall into the receiving window of the sensor.

It’s just spot – need a special algorithm that converts diffused in the glass light in the original image, however, the team Manama just finished working on it. The output is a coarse-grained, but quite depiction. That is enough to take a very simple set of accessories and to provide a connection to a computer or other computing device to any window to turn into a video camera.

Now the team Manoma working on using more powerful sensors and learns to intercept the light from the weak, non-directional sources. The practical application of the technology they see in the automatic system monitoring – at this low quality pictures you need to design cameras are not for people but for cars. For example, for situations where it is important to track the fact of motion in the region of interest, without additional energy consumption.
