German scientist visited Institute of Genetic Resources

The meeting was held at the Institute of Genetic Resources (IGR) of the National Academy of Sciences  with Professor Alexander Bajin, Head of the Experimental Surgery Research Group of Munich University Clinic in Germany.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Director of IGR Scientific Affairs, PhD in Biology Mehraj Abbasov, Head of International Relations, Information and Media Department of the same institution, PHD in Biology Ayaz Mammadov and Dean of Foreign Students at Azerbaijan Medical University, IGR Human Genetics Lab leading scientific researcher, PhD in medicine Orkhan Isayev.

M.Abbasov gave a broad overview on the structure of IGR, modern research, results obtained, positive dynamics of scientific articles published in international journals in recent years, as well as the activities of newly created laboratories in various fields of modern genetics. He noted that under the leadership of the correspondent member of ANAS Zeynal Akperov, wide-ranging researches on human genetics, as well as the collection, storage and comprehensive study of plant genetic resources, and many young specialists trained abroad have been involved in the research. In addition, the institute actively participates in international projects, as well as closely cooperates with large companies and clinics around the country.

Professor A.Bajin briefed on the research and cooperation opportunities at the University of Munich and said that his laboratory was carrying out numerous research works from different countries around the world. He also informed about the importance of his researches by Professor Orkhan Isayev and noted that an important article in 2017 was published in a high-impact magazine. Presently, O.Isayev's research on stem cells is of great importance and in the near future that the preliminary results will be published, A.Bajin underlined.

During the discussions, have reached preliminary agreement to send young researchers of the institute to Department of Experimental Surgery of the University Clinic of Munich within the framework of the European Commission's joint participation in major projects such as "HORIZON-2020", "Erasmus +" and the DAAD, co-ordinated by the German Embassy.

Later, Genomics, Human Genetics and Computational Genomics laboratories of IGR Biotechnology Department  were examined.
