ANAS Institute of Botany successfully realized the project supported by the of the Volkswagen Foundation

Program Director of the German Volkswagen Foundation Program (Volkswagen Stiftung) Dr. Matthias Nöllenburg visited the ANAS Institute of Botany.

The goal was to get acquainted with the results of the project "Development of methods for the conservation of plant varieties in the Caucasus", jointly implemented by the Institute with the support of the Volkswagen Foundation and the Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem (Germany).

The guest met with the director of the institution, academician Alizade Valida, the project coordinator in Azerbaijan, head of the Office of International Relations, PhD in Biology Esmira Alirzayeva and the institute staff.

Academician V.Alizade noted that, within the framework of the project, the infrastructure of the Herbarium Foundation was reconstructed and equipped with modern equipment with the support of the National Academy of Sciences.

Then, Dr. Matthias Nöllenburg got acquainted with the Herbarium Foundation of the Institute. He informed about creating a digital version of the exhibits and adding them to the virtual information database, held discussions with young professionals working in this direction.

German scientist also got acquainted with the updated collection of herbaria on mycology and algology. Professor of ANAS Dilzara Aghayeva informed the guest about the research and achievements in this field conducted at the institute.

The scientist also visited the Museum of Botany.

Dr. Dr. Matthias Nöllenburg praised the achievements of the scientific institution and stressed that, the project is one of the most successful of the Volkswagen-supported projects.

In conclusion, the parties agreed to continue cooperation.

It should be noted that, the work of the project began in 2011 as part of a signed memorandum between the foundation and the institute, while the second phase of work started in 2016.
