November 9 - Day of National Flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan

One of the state attributes of the modern independent Azerbaijan is the tricolor flag. For the first time, the national flag was adopted by the decision of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic dated November 9, 1918 and had state status until April 1920.

On November 17, 1990 at the session of the Supreme Majlis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic under the chairmanship and by the initiative of great leader Heydar Aliyev, flag was approved as the national flag of the autonomous republic.

February 5, 1991 the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted the Law “On the State Flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan” and flag got the status of the state.

After the restoration of state independence on October 18 of the same year, the Republic of Azerbaijan, which declared itself the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, adopted its state symbols, including the flag. The Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On the Rules for Using the State Flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan” dated June 8, 2004 improved the legal framework in this area.

On November 7, 2009, AR President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree “On the establishment of the Day of the State Flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan”. And on December 4 of the same year, the Milli Majlis officially approved November 9 as the Day of the National Flag.

After the restoration of state independence, the state flag of Azerbaijan as a symbol of national sovereignty has become for all citizens of our country one of the sacred attributes of statehood. This flag, inherited from the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, demonstrates the commitment of our people to the ideology of freedom, national-spiritual values and universal ideals.

It is a rectangular panel consisting of three horizontal stripes of identical width: the top is blue, the middle is red and the bottom is green, with a picture on both sides of the flag in the middle of the red strip of the crescent and the eight-pointed star in white.
