Academician Arif Hashimov turns 70

Arif Hashimov, academician, a well-known scientist in the field of energy, Honored Scientist, State Prize Laureate, Director of the Research and Design and Energy Institute of Azerenerji OJSC, head laboratory of the Institute of Physics of ANAS, academician Arif Hashimov.

Arif Hashimov was born on September 28, 1949 in the village of Shahbuz, Nakhchivan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Azerbaijan SSR. In 1971 he graduated from the Energy Department of the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry with a degree in electrical engineering. In the same year, he began working in the Electro physics laboratory of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. In 2002, he was appointed director of the Institute of Physics and served in this position until 2009. In 2007-2013 he was the first vice president of ANAS. Currently, he is the head of the Laboratory of High Voltage Physics and Engineering at the Institute of Physics, as well as the director of the Scientific Research and Design Institute of Azerenerji OJSC, as well as a professor at the Azerbaijan Technical University. A. Hashimov taught for several years at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, and was also a professor in the department of high-voltage engineering and electrothermal equipment.

In 1980, he defended his thesis on "Modeling technique on a computer for recovering voltages in electrical systems", and in 1993, his doctoral thesis "Modeling the surface effect and corona in the calculation of wave processes in electric networks." In 2007, he was elected an active member of ANAS.

The Azerbaijan School of High Voltage Physics and Engineering, created by academician Chingiz Juvarly, was significantly developed by A. Hashimov. The results of studies conducted with the participation of A. Hashimov were repeatedly included in the scientific reports of the USSR and ANAS as a very important result.

The academician conducted scientific research in the field of physical and technical problems of energy, which is one of the most important areas of modern science. Under his leadership, Detection and prevention of Ferro resonance processes in voltage transformers and capacitive voltage dividers of 110-500 kV switchgears was developed. At the same time, work was carried out to identify mechanisms and develop the scientific foundations of the physicochemical processes occurring on the surface and in the volume of dielectric materials under the influence of strong electric fields and discharges, as well as a study of the physics of gaseous, liquid, and solid dielectrics.

In 1978, A. Hashimov was awarded the State Prize for co-authorship in a comprehensive work in the field of neutral modes of high-voltage electric networks. Before the advent of modern computers, the academician developed algorithms for calculating wave processes in complex electrical circuits, which made it possible to conduct many studies of mathematical models of short circuit currents, recovery, and limiting the extreme stresses of the Ferro zone.

Under his leadership, prepared 4 doctors of sciences and 17 PhDs. He is the author of more than 310 scientific articles, dozens of patented inventions and 5 monographs. A. Hashimov was awarded the title of Honored Scientist in 2005 for fruitful scientific, scientific, organizational and pedagogical activities.

We congratulate the outstanding scientist on his 70th birthday and wish him good health and success in his career!
