January 14, marks the 90th anniversary of an outstanding oil scientist and geologist, first vice president of the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), two-time laureate of the State Prize and the Heydar Aliyev Prize, holder of the Istiglal, Sharaf and Shohrat orders, academician Khoshbakht Yusifzadeh.

Academician Khoshbakht Yusifzadeh was born on January 14, 1930 in the village of Pirshagi in Baku. After graduating from high school in 1947, he entered the geological exploration faculty of the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute named after M. Azizbeyov (now the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy).

He began his career at the USSR Ministry of Oil Industry in Baku, where he worked as a senior engineer and chief of staff. In March 1954, he was appointed senior geologist at the first deposit of the “Gurganneft” trust (now Oil Rocks).

H. Yusifzadeh in 1958-1959 worked as a chief geologist at the Central Research and Production Workshop "Oil Rocks", and in 1959-1960 - head of the shop. In 1970-1992, the geologist worked as chief geologist - deputy general director of the Caspian Oil Union, the All-Union Association of the Caspian Oil and Gas Industry and the Caspian Sea Oil Production Association.

He was the first vice-president of the State Concern “Azerineft” in 1992-1994, adviser to the president of the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan and vice-president of the State Committee for Geology, Geophysics and Field Development in 1994-2004. Since 2004, on behalf of President Ilham Aliyev, he is the first vice president of SOCAR for geology, geophysics and field development.

In 1960, an oil scientist defended his PhD thesis on the topic “Research of oil wells and formations and the rational development and operation of oil-bearing facilities in the southwestern wing of the Oil Stones field”, and in 1987, his doctoral thesis “Principles and methods for expedited exploration and exploration in offshore oil and gas fields ”and received the degree of Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences. He received the title of professor in 2005. Since 2007 is an active member of ANAS.

Under his leadership and with direct participation, more than 20 oil and gas fields were discovered and commissioned in the Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Russian sectors of the Caspian Sea, including the world famous Azeri, Chirag, Guneshli. Since 1988, took an active part in all the work carried out jointly with foreign companies. He played a major role in the development of the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli fields (the deep-water part) and the discovery of the Ashrafi (1998), Garabakh (1998) and such large gas condensate fields as Shahdeniz (1999) and Umid (2010) 3etc.

Under the guidance of the scientist, the scientific foundations of the method of accelerated exploration of offshore oil and gas fields, the three-story method (“break” suite, Podkirmakinskaya suite, Kalinskaya suite) prospecting and exploration work on promising structures, in sediments of the productive stratum with multilayer oil and gas potential were developed and applied with a large stratigraphic range, at great depths of the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.

In 2000, the scientist was awarded the Istiglal Order, in 2004 the Order of Shohrat, in 2010 the Order of Sharaf, in 2017 the Order of Labor of the 1st Degree, and in 2018 the Nizami Ganjavi Gold Medal; in 2019 - the Prize of Heydar Aliyev.

For his services in the development and application of nanotechnology in oil production, in 2010 H. Yusifzadeh, along with a group of SOCAR specialists, was awarded a special UNESCO medal, his name was included in the encyclopedia of this international organization.

In 2008, he was awarded the Golden Star medal of the International Academy of Sciences for the Study of the Turkic World.
