Using an infrared spectrograph located at the Keka Mountain Observatory in Hawaii, astronomers have discovered the ancient ultra-massive galaxy XMM-2599, reports the Astrophysical Journal. This “monster" appeared 12 billion years ago, when the Universe was very young - its age was 1.8 billion years.
Scientists estimated the total mass of stars in this system at 300 billion suns, and this is an out of the ordinary event. However, for some reason, after several million years, the XMM-2599 ceased to give birth to new luminaries.
