Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

Institute of Geography named after academician Hasan Aliyev of ANAS studies the laws of development of nature of Azerbaijan, natural resources and environmental characteristics. The economic, geographical and political problems of production, social infrastructure and territorial organization of the population are investigated.

During the study, natural and technological hazards were evaluated based on ArcGis technologies and a digital map “Ecological Risk of Azerbaijan” was developed. It was found that 37,2% of the republic’s territory has a very low level of environmental risk, 19,8% - low, 23,9% - medium, 12,4% - high, and 6,8% - very high. The results obtained can play the role of a source in the sustainable development of regions and the organization of environmental management.

For the first time, a digital map of “Land Degradation” was developed taking into account degradation factors on the Samur-Absheron Inter-Caspian Plain site based on a comparison of actual field expeditions with materials obtained using modern principles and methods (remote sensing, GPS, GPS, etc.) .

It was found that the degradation process covers 97.5 percent of the study area. 61.4% of them belong to the heavy and very heavy class.
