Employees of the Institute of Geography working on an international project

Employees of the Institute of Geography named after academician Hasan Aliyev of ANAS are working on a project on "Landscape planning, affecting the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic under the quarantine regime."

The project, entitled "Study of changes in the landscape cover of the metropolitan zones of Rome and Baku, based on remote sensing and GIS data", is the winner of the competition announced for 2020-2021 as part of a scientific cooperation program signed by ANAS and the Italian National Research Council. The main goal of the project is to compare changes in the landscape cover of various metropolitan areas.

The executors of the project from the Institute of Geography are the head Department of Landscape Studies and Landscape Planning, PhD in Geography, Associate Professor Mirnuh Ismayilov and senior researcher, PhD in Geography Shahnaz Amanova.

According to Ismayilov, the observance of environmental standards during the planning of urban landscapes between buildings and neighborhoods, the degree of compliance of green spaces with norms affect the spread of various infections, viruses and diseases. From this point of view, the study of urban landscape planning is important. Monitoring changes in the landscape cover is necessary not only for understanding the processes occurring on the surface of the earth, but at the same time it is of great importance for the future development of metropolitan zones.

According to the results of the project, it will be possible to study the changes occurring in the soil cover, identify critical zones and conduct research in even larger areas.

According to the scientist, during joint research, scientists and specialists of both parties will meet twice a year, discuss the results and exchange views. Currently, for well-known reasons, work is carried out online.
