ANAS corresponding member Gurban Yetirmishli: “The RCSS operates in an expanded work mode”

The Bureau of Earthquake Research of the Republican Center for Seismological Survey (RCSS) of ANAS and the seismic stations in the country continue their activities in an intensive mode with a limited number of employees. Earthquake Research Bureau employees monitor the status and software parameters of telemetry stations to ensure uninterrupted operation of the system. Also, any problems arising in the process of work are quickly eliminated.

This was stated in an interview by the director general of the center, corresponding member of ANAS Gurban Yetirmishli. According to him, the center’s network of 40 seismic stations currently processes local, near and far earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides and explosions.

He said a 1751 earthquake was recorded by seismic stations during the pandemic. In Azerbaijan and the surrounding regions, 1,195 earthquakes occurred. During the pandemic, an increase in seismic activity was observed in the southeastern part of the Greater Caucasus (Oguz-Gabala, Shamakhi, Siyazan, Guba). In the Talish mountain zone, in the Samukh region, activity was higher than the background level. In the Caspian, seismicity was at the background level.

The Director General of the RCSS noted that on the basis of the processed data separate catalogs are compiled: “These catalogs show the parameters of the earthquake sources. Processed data is collected in a database and archived. Based on the catalog, seismicity in Azerbaijan and adjacent regions is analyzed. The Bureau also sends earthquakes of magnitude ml≥3.0 to the relevant authorities.”

According to G.Yetirmishli, during the pandemic, virtual discussions were held with the heads of various departments about the upcoming tasks and instructions were given. The next issue of the scientific journal Seismoprognosis observations in the territory of Azerbaijan has been prepared for publication, which will be released in the first half of 2020.

In conclusion, the director emphasized that at present the center continues to operate in an enhanced mode, observing all the requirements, rules and regimes of the Operational Headquarters under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Virtual discussions on cooperation and exchange of experience with the partners of the center abroad are also regularly held.
