“The creation of common alphabet of the Turkic states will be an important event. This is essential for further strengthening of partnership and unity of the Turkic states in such a geopolitical condition, this is a call of our time” - said Isa Habibbeyli, president of ANAS at the second meeting of the commission on single alphabet of the Turkic states held on May 6 in Baku.

Reminding that the reforms of the alphabet in the Turkic world started by prominent Azerbaijani thinker Mirza Fatali Akhundov, Isa Habibbeyli, the academician said that the Latin-based alphabet script was created in 1879 and certain works had been done in this direction by the Alphabet Commission established in 1924.

“Nearly 100 years had been passed since the First Turkological Congress took place from February to March of 1926. The congress was of great importance for studying the history, literature, language, alphabet, ethnography and culture of the Turkic people living in the territory of USSR. Two issues were discussed at the congress. One of them was simplification and adoption of Arabic alphabet, the second was passing to Latin alphabet. 70 percent of the participants adopted Latin alphabet”. –said Isa Habibbeyli mentioning that there was a difference of opinion about the graphic signs of the Latin alphabet during the discussion. The president of ANAS wished success to the commission in the creation of single alphabet of the Turkic states.
