On May 30, the outstanding scientist in the field of zoology and entomology, the head of the laboratory of the Institute of Zoology of ANAS, academician Seyfaddin Aliyev turns 90 years old.

Seyfaddin Aliyev was born on May 30, 1930 in the Sharur region of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In 1946 he graduated from the Medical College in Nakhchivan, in 1951 - from the Chemical and Biological Faculty of the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute.

He worked as the head of the pedagogical department in the Ministry of Education of Nakhchivan and as a teacher of chemistry and biology in the city working and youth secondary school No. 4. In 1952, he began his scientific career as a junior researcher in the entomology laboratory of the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, in 1964 he was elected senior researcher, and in 1978 - the head of the Biological Development Laboratory of the Cotton scoop. From 1986 he headed the Laboratory of Entomology, from 1988 to 2017 - Department of Entomology and the Laboratory of Fauna and Insect Taxonomy.

S. Aliyev defended his PhD thesis in 1961, his doctoral thesis in 1977, and in 1998 received the title of professor. In 2001, he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS, and in 2007 – an active member.

Scientists for the fauna of Azerbaijan identified 716 species of scoops. Of these, 390 species were first identified for the fauna of the Republic, 145 species for the Caucasus, 67 species for the territory of the former USSR. For the first time, their distribution in natural areas, vertical zones, landscape zones, biotopes, ecological groups, their formation, zoogeographic analysis, nutritional relationships, biological characteristics of harmful species were studied, and the scientific basis for combating harmful species was developed. For the first time, the harmfulness of 61 scoop species to agricultural plants was established. 21 species of parasites and 12 species of predators of entomophages of a serious pest of cotton moth were identified, their quantitative criteria and role in cotton fields were studied. The results of these studies were introduced on farms as a method of integrated control of the cotton scoop.

Academician S. Aliyev is the author of 168 scientific works, including 4 monographs and 7 books, the author of an article in the II edition of the Red Book of the Azerbaijan Republic (2013) on 21 rare and endangered species of cotton scoops and 31 types of butterflies.

He is one of the authors of the textbook "Zoology" for grades 7-8 of the secondary school (2003; 2006), the 10-volume "Encyclopedia of Azerbaijan" (1980-1987). He was the editor of 8 textbooks, 4 study guides, 6 monographs and 4 books prepared for universities. He was also the main compiler and editor of the second volume (2004) of

he monograph “Animal World of Azerbaijan”, published in Russian and Azerbaijani languages.

S. Aliyev adequately represented domestic science at various international congresses, conferences and congresses. Under his scientific supervision, 9 doctors of philosophy and 3 doctors of sciences were trained.

Academician S. Aliyev was awarded with honorary diplomas by the Presidium of ANAS, as well as local and international scientific organizations.
