22 new seismic stations will be installed in Azerbaijan

The Republican Seismological Survey Center (RSSC) of ANAS has launched the project "Expansion of the seismic network in the Caucasus and Central Asia" with the support of the Ukrainian Science and Technology Center.

The aim of the project is to expand the seismic network in the Caucasus and Central Asia, and to renew the technopark to be used for seismic research. For this purpose, 22 new seismic stations will be installed in Azerbaijan. The new seismic stations will also allow monitoring the activity of Bozdag-Gobu and Lokbatan mud volcanoes near the Absheron Peninsula.

An online meeting was held with the participation of about 30 seismologists from Azerbaijan, the United States, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Georgia.

Gurban Yetirmishli, Director General of the Center, Telman Jafarov, Head of the International Relations Department of the Center, Rugiyya Karimova, System Administrator, Yelena Taberko, Manager for International Cooperation Projects of the Science and Technology Center of Ukraine, Head of the Seismological Laboratory of the Geological Sciences Department of Michigan State University Engineer Daniel Burk, Director of the National Information Center of Kazakhstan Natalya Mikhailova, Head of the Seismological Projects Department of the Livermore National Laboratory Rengin Gok, Station Placement Coordinator of the United Seismological Research Institutes Ryan Bierma, Professor of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of Michigan State University Georgia Director of the Seismic Monitoring Center Tea Godoladze and others attended in a meeting.

Lets` noted that, at present, there are 35 permanent seismic stations of RSSCin the territory of the republic. In addition, there are 17 stationary basalt seismic stations under the Caucasus Crossing project, as well as 10 stationary basalt seismic stations. After the installation of new stations, a total of 84 seismic stations will operate in the country.
