On July 19, prominent geophysicist, director of the Institute of Oil and Gas, academician Fakhraddin Gadirov turns 70.

Fakhraddin Gadirov was born on July 19, 1950 in Sheki in an intellectual family. After graduating from Sheki Secondary School No. 10 with a silver medal in 1967, he was admitted to the Faculty of Physics of the Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University, BSU).

He received his PhD in geophysics in 1984, his doctorate in geology and mineralogy in 2002, and his professorship in geophysics in 2007. In 2007 he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS, and in 2014 an active member.

He began his career as a physics teacher. In 1974 he worked in the Gravimetry Laboratory of the Institute of Geology of ANAS (now the Institute of Geology and Geophysics), in 1989-2003 he headed that laboratory, in 2005-2007 in the Department of Geotectonics and Geodynamics, and in 2008 in the Department of Geodynamics and Seismology. The scientist has been the head of the "Earth Physics" section since 2008, and the head of the Geodynamics and Space Geodesy Department since 2015.

Academician F. Gadirov is also the head of the Azerbaijan National Information Center of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) operating under the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS.

In 2013-2019, the geophysicist was a member of the Presidium of ANAS and academician-secretary of the Division of Earth Sciences. Currently, he is the Deputy Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Division of Earth Sciences of ANAS. By the decision of the Presidium of ANAS, he has been acting as the director of the Institute of Oil and Gas since 2020.

The main directions of the scientist's scientific activity are numerical analysis of geophysical fields and study of spatio-temporal distribution patterns, GPS monitoring of modern crustal movements of the Caucasus-Caspian region, modern kinematics, modeling of depth structure, study of earthquakes and faults by fractal and statistical methods.

Academician F. Gadirov is the author of more than 250 scientific articles, including the monograph "Model of gravity and depth structure of Azerbaijan" published in Russian, volumes IV, V and VII "Geology of Azerbaijan", "Hydrocarbon systems of the South Caspian Basin" in English, two-volume “Geosciences of Azerbaijan” published by “Springer” publishing house, etc. He is the co-author of books, as well as a gravitational map of the Caspian region.

He supervised for 14 doctors of philosophy and 2 doctors of sciences in geophysics in Azerbaijan.

Along with scientific activity, Gadirov is also engaged in pedagogical activities. He is a professor of the Department of Seismology and Subsoil Physics of the Faculty of Geology of Baku State University and the head of the branch of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS.

The geophysicist was awarded the Honorary Decree of ANAS in 2010 and the Order of Shohrat in 2015 by the order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for his achievements and services in the training of scientific personnel.

The well-known scientist has worked in a number of leading scientific centers around the world - the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of South Carolina, the University of Utah, the University of Jena in Germany, the University of Maria Curie in France, the Institute of Earth Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. cooperates with.

Gadirov has repeatedly delivered scientific lectures at international conferences in the United States and Europe. He was awarded scientific grants from the Science Development Foundation under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, SOCAR Science Foundation, NSF, CRDF, STCU and EAGE of the US National Science Foundation.

Celebrating its 70th anniversary, academician Fakhraddin Gadirov, who has inexhaustible scientific potential, continues his scientific research today. He has gained a great reputation not only in Azerbaijan, but also in the international scientific community for his professionalism and high human qualities.
