Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

A delegation comprising STRIDES Project Director Becca Price — a leading U.S. Department of State assistance program in global health security — International Development Director at “Black & Veatch” Kyle Huston, Executive Director of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Office of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Stephen Bicknell, CDC Deputy Executive Director Joel Stanoevich, and Chief Technical Advisor Lia Gvinjiliya visited the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).

During the meeting with the guests, ANAS President, academician Isa Habibbeyli, spoke about the Academy’s role in the development of science in Azerbaijan, research conducted in line with modern challenges, and international cooperation. He particularly emphasized that research on artificial intelligence has been a key focus in recent years.

He also noted that in recent years ANAS has expanded its international scientific cooperation and has been elected a full member of influential academic organizations in the global scientific community.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli stated that the research carried out by the American experts is of particular relevance against the backdrop of pandemics that have affected the world in recent years. He added that Azerbaijani scientists are also paying close attention to these issues, with significant research being conducted in this area at institutions under the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences of ANAS.

He highlighted that last year, specialists of the division conducted important studies on the molecular-genetic basis of biological processes, genomics, computational biology, the application of artificial intelligence in biology and medicine, as well as the use of high technologies and stem cells in drug development and reproductive medicine. The results obtained have been published in reputable journals.

The ANAS President expressed confidence that joint projects with American experts will yield significant results in the future.

The guests were later presented with commemorative gifts.

At the end of the visit, the delegation toured the Presidium building of ANAS.

It should be noted that the delegation was accompanied by representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan — Deputy Head of the Economic Section Alexander Ryan, Commercial Specialist Govhar Mammadova, and translator Aygun Rahimova.

Also attending the meeting were ANAS Vice-President, Chair of the Scientific Council of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences, academician Irada Huseynova; Head of the Department of Foreign Relations and Work with International Scientific Organizations of the ANAS Presidium Office, Associate Professor Esmira Alirzayeva; as well as staff members of the relevant division and department.
