Heavy bereavement for Azerbaijan scientific community

Turcologist-linguist and scientist of Azerbaijan, winner of the Order “Shohrat”, member of the Azerbaijan Writers Union, active member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, State Prize laureate, honored scientist Akhundov Aghamusa Agasi oglu passed away on September 5 at the 83rd year of his life.

Aghamusa Akhundov was born on February 2, 1932 in Kurdamir. After graduating from high school with honors he entered the Faculty of Azerbaijan State University (ASU), and then continued his education at the Faculty of Western European languages of the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of languages. At the same time, the scientist was a graduate student at ASU, worked as a teacher, senior teacher, lecturer, professor in the Department of General Linguistics, and also served as dean of the Faculty of Philology of the University.

Doctor of Philology (1964), Professor (1967), Corresponding member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (2001), Honored Science Worker (1990), State Prize Laureate (1986), honorary member of the Turkish Language Society (2000), graduated from Baku State University, Faculty of Philology (1955) and Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Western European languages (1965). He served as Dean of the Faculty of Philology (1967-1974 and 1980-1990), and Head of the Department of General Linguistics of Baku State University (1981-1990). Since 1990, he is the head of Institute of Linguistics named after Nasimi, ANAS, Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, and since 1992 editor in chief of the journal "Turkic Studies", since 2001 Academician-Secretary of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, ANAS. His works have been published in Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Hungary, Turkey, Iran, etc.

His book "General Linguistics. History, theory and methods of Linguistics" was awarded by "Education" Society (1994), and textbook "Azerbaijani language 5-6" by the Ministry of Education (1972).

He is the founder of the school of Azerbaijani phonology and the field of syntagmatic phonetics of the Azerbaijani language and an outstanding scientist in theoretical linguistics. He authored various works dedicated to the grammar of the Azerbaijani language, historical phonetics, etymology, artistic language, stylistics, speech culture, mathematical linguistics and other issues, and textbooks for secondary and high schools. He has been a member of the editorial board of the journal "Phonetics. General Linguistics. Communication researches", regularly published in Germany (1978), and since 1980 an international consultant of that journal.

Since 1974 he has been one of the first two members of the Committee of Soviet Turkologists elected from Azerbaijan. He was awarded the honorary diploma of Friendship Forces Organization of US for his service in nations’ friendship field. He is an honorary foreign national of New Orleans, US and honorary member of municipal council of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.He is an editor-in-chief of the journals, “News of ANAS” (arts & social sciences series) and "Turkic Studies". He is a member of the Constitutional Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan, State Language Commission, and Commission for amnesty under President". In 2000 he was awarded the Shohrat Order.

The memory of the famous scientist and responsive person Aghamusa Akhundov will always live in the hearts of those who knew him.
