Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

On October 10, celebrate biologist scientist, Lab head of the Institute of Physiology, Telman Agayev is 80 years old.

Telman Agayev was born in Vagudi village of Sisyan region of Western Azerbaijan (present Armenia). In 1959 graduated from Azerbaijan Agriculture Institute department of Zootechnics.

Defended his PhD thesis on “Effect of gastric receptor irritation on the metabolism of proteins and free amino acids in the brain” in 1969 and doctoral thesis on “Regularities of age-related formation of glutamic acid in the visual analyzer of brain in 1983.

In 2001, he was elected corresponding member of ANAS.

In 1993-1995 he served as Deputy Director for scientific affairs of the Institute of Physiology of ANAS and in the years 1995-2013 - the position of director of the institute. 

T.Aghayev is a specialist in evolutionary physiology and biochemistry. 

The main direction of scientist’s scientific work is making research on the role of glutamate, aspartate, GABA, serotonin, norepinephrine and the enzymes involved in their metabolism at the cellular level in various stages of ontogeny.

The scientist is the author of over 320 scientific papers. He supervised for 10 doctors of sciences and 37 PhDs.

T. Agayev is the chairman of the Azerbaijani Society of Biochemistry and a member of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies, president of the Society of Physiologists, editorial board of the journal "News of ANAS" (a series of biological and medical sciences), "Ecoenergetics" and "News of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia" and member of the National Committee of UNESCO Ethics, Bioethics and Technology and the International Brain Research Organization.

In 2013, scientist was awarded the diploma and a gold medal awarded to him by the European scientific and industrial chamber of the professional activity.
