100 years pass since commissioning of the water supply system “Shollar”

It takes 100 years from the date of commissioning of the first Baku water pipeline "Shollar." So, in 2017 will be marked 100th date of commissioning of the pipeline, informed in a meeting of the Presidium of ANAS, Academician-secretary of Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS, Academician Fakhraddin Gadirov.

The academician said that over the last 100 years, water has played an important role in the city of Baku with drinking water. Noting that Shollar water is the first running water, held for the Absheron Peninsula with drinking water, scientist added that at the time was the longest aqueduct water supply in Europe. It takes its origins from the groundwater in Khudat city, located 187 km from Baku. Project Manager was a famous English engineer William Harley Lindley, direct support for the project was the famous philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev.

Academician Fakhraddin Gadirov said that the construction of the aqueduct was started in 1903, but due to various socio-political events in the course of any interruptions, resulting construction was completed 14 years later.

At the event, it was stressed that the construction of water supply system in the early XX century, has been made possible by conducting serious research in the field of geology, chemistry, physics, medicine, technical sciences. From this point of view, implementation of the first Baku water pipeline "Schollar" is the result of scientific advances produced in Azerbaijan in the field of natural sciences at the beginning of the XX century.

The meeting of the Presidium adopted a decision to hold scientific-practical conference devoted to the 100th anniversary of the commissioning Shollar aqueduct in January-February 2017, together with the JSC "Azersu", publish a book-album, as well as organize an exhibition dedicated to this event. Organization of the above activities was entrusted to the Department of Earth and Social Sciences of ANAS.
