Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

At a meeting of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), the next item on the agenda was the renaming of the Toponymy Department of the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of ANAS to the Onomastics Department.

ANAS President, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, stated that following the instructions set by the head of state in his speech at the 80th anniversary of ANAS regarding the preservation of the purity of the Azerbaijani language, a number of immediate steps have been taken at the Academy. He noted that the expansion of the functions of the Toponymy Department and its renaming as the Onomastics Department is a logical continuation of these steps. The head of ANAS also emphasized that in the future, a set of recommendations concerning personal names will be prepared and submitted to the relevant bodies.

Following the discussions, by decision of the Presidium, the name of the Toponymy Department of the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of ANAS was changed to the Onomastics Department.

It should be noted that at a previous meeting of the Presidium, a decision was also adopted to establish the “Modern Azerbaijani Language and Speech Culture” Department on the basis of the existing “Modern Azerbaijani Language” Department at the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of ANAS, using the current staff positions and internal resources.
