On February 27, a ceremonial opening of the international scientific conference titled “The Founders and Lessons of the First Turkological Congress: History and Modernity” was held in the Grand Hall of the Presidium building of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The anniversary events then continued with panel sessions at ANAS and Khazar University. Hayati Besirli, a professor at the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Literature at Ankara Haci Bayram Veli University, whose research mainly focuses on youth policy, socio-economic and cultural processes, and the sociology of culture, also arrived in Baku to participate in the events. The scholar shared his impressions with us.
Hayati Besirli noted that the intellectuals of Turkic peoples who came to Baku for the Congress 100 years ago demonstrated their determination to work together, and emphasized that the same spirit was evident at the commemorative gathering as well: “Baku holds the same significance for Turkish history today as it did 100 years ago. This beautiful city, which hosted the Turkic peoples at the First Turkological Congress, once again demonstrated the finest example of its hospitality during the 100th anniversary events.
National Leader Heydar Aliyev had a saying: ‘One nation, two states.’ Our relations and the cooperation we will continue to develop are a clear example of this principle.”
